esigning a small kitchen may seem like a daunting task especially when it comes to making sure that you have enough storage. However, you don’t have to sacrifice storage space if you have a relatively small kitchen. Today, we are going to talk about some kitchen remodeling tips to maximize the storage space in your small kitchen.

1. Decide on a floor plan before anything else.

A floor plan.

When dealing with small kitchen remodeling projects, every inch matters. Should you go for an open floor plan or build a galley kitchen instead? Small kitchen space does not necessarily mean easier kitchen remodeling. Small kitchens can get tricky to plan so make sure to work with a professional from the get-go to avoid any future problems, storage-related or not. There are many things to consider when there is limited space available so it is important to first discuss with your remodeler which layout will work best for your house before looking at appliances and fixtures.

2. Choose custom over ready-made cabinets.

Ready made cabinets

Buying ready-made cabinets may be easier and cheaper, but custom cabinets are sturdier and ensure that your limited kitchen space is maximized. By investing in custom cabinets, you have the guarantee that they fit perfectly in your kitchen and that every inch of your kitchen serves a purpose.

3. Add internal drawers to your cabinets.

Internal Drawers.

Big cabinets can store smaller items too by having internal drawers. Internal drawers are easier to build, more affordable, and take up less space than ordinary drawers. You can add as many internal drawers as you like depending on your need. They are great for storing your spices, pantry items, pot lids, and plastic containers.

4. Build an overhead refrigerator shelf.

Overhead refrigerator shelf

It is rare for refrigerators to go way up to the ceiling, and if you have a small kitchen, you most likely have a refrigerator that is also small to medium in size to match your kitchen’s size. By building an overhead refrigerator shelf, you can have storage space for appliances like a crockpot or an air fryer that you use on a somewhat regular basis but not regular enough to always be on your counter. This way, they are out of your sight but still accessible enough when you need to use them.

5. Push shelves or cabinets as high up as possible.

Push shelves for your pantry

In relation to overhead storage spaces as mentioned above, it could be a good idea to build shelves or cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. This storage solution does not only give you more storage space, but it also makes your kitchen space seem taller than it is.

6. Install hanging kitchen racks.

Hanging kitchen racks

Almost all small kitchens tend to have one common problem — there’s just not enough drawer space. A storage solution for this is to only use your drawers for your silverware and smaller or flatter tools like knives and hang bigger cooking tools such as whisks, mashers, graters, shears, and ladles. You can even hang your bulky pots and pans so especially when you have some nicely designed pieces that you do not mind showing off to your guests. Additionally, you can hang mugs instead of putting them on shelves. They are used every day for morning coffee yet they never really stack well so they just tend to take up too much valuable space.

7. Pick multifunctional pieces.

Multifunctional appliances

When looking for pieces to add to your kitchen, it is better to go for multifunctional ones since you don’t have much space to work with. This applies to smaller additions such as appliances or bigger ones like the kitchen island. For example, utilize the space below the countertop of your kitchen island by adding cabinets or a wine fridge.
